The UN Security Council has approved a controversial U.S.-drafted resolution that could reshape Gaza’s future. The resolution passed with 13 votes in favor, 0 against, and 2 abstentions (Russia and China). It endorses U.S. President Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, which took effect on October 10 with the announcement of a ceasefire intended to end the war on Gaza. Since the ceasefire was declared, the Israeli military has repeatedly violated it, killing more than 240 Palestinians in Gaza.
Trump’s resolution calls for the creation of a transitional “Board of Peace” to temporarily govern Gaza, chaired by Trump himself. It also authorizes an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to operate in Gaza for a renewable two-year mandate. In addition, the resolution outlines a potential path to Palestinian statehood, contingent on meeting a set of reforms. Critics note that the resolution disregards previous UN resolutions affirming the Palestinian right to self-determination and sovereignty over their land.
Leftist Palestinian voices have strongly opposed the U.S. resolution, viewing it as another form of occupation. They argue that any foreign intervention in Gaza violates Palestinian national sovereignty and perpetuates the suffering of the Palestinian people. They stress that true stability can only be achieved by ending the occupation, lifting the siege, and respecting the Palestinian people’s rights and inalienable freedoms.
In discussing this issue, we echo the perspectives of Bassam Salhi, General Secretary of the Palestinian People’s Party, and Rateeba Al-Natasha, a member of the FIDA Party’s Political Bureau, both of whom are part of our network in Palestine. We extend our appreciation for their contributions and insights.
