Jan van Aken, Die Linke’s co-chair, condemns German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s trip to Israel and his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

On Sunday, December 7, 2025 German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Israel and met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes in Gaza.

Jan van Aken, Die Linke’s Co-Chair, condemned the visit and the meeting with Netanyahu stating: “Merz’s trip to Israel is a declaration of war on international law. He is meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu even though there is an international arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes. A meeting with an alleged war criminal is not a normal state visit”

Additionally, Jan van Aken criticized the resumption of German arms deliveries to Israel, calling it a political scandal and arguing that Germany should not deliver weapons as long as the Israeli government does not publicly support a political solution involving a separate Palestinian state.
