Hope in the midst of devastation. Al Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility, has reopened its emergency department, five months after being besieged and attacked by Israeli forces. Despite the destruction and immense challenges, medical staff have returned, using salvaged equipment to offer life-saving care to Palestinians in northern Gaza as attacks continue.
In April, Israeli forces conducted a two-week assault on the hospital, resulting in dozens of deaths, injuries, arrests, and widespread destruction. Mass graves were later discovered after Israeli forces withdrew.
While the emergency department is now operational, fears of future strikes remain ever-present. The continued dedication of Gaza’s healthcare workers throughout this past year has been critical in providing care amidst ongoing conflict.
