Emancipatory Education

Similar to Palestine the teaching – learning structures in Jordan are mostly characterized by traditional and hierarchal concepts. However to kick start social and political change and to cope with the major transformation challenges ahead of the Jordanian society, it is essential that education is conceptualized and organized to support critical thinking capacities as well as the activation and participation of people. To this end, RLS partners with civil society actors, grassroots activists and decision makers to further gain knowledge of and skills in emancipatory education tools and methods and to use them in their respective working fields.

 Arab Education Forum

AEF is a civil initiative started in 1998 by educational activists. AEF is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization active in the Arab World in the field of community and youth work. The mission of AEF is to contribute to an Arab cultural regeneration project that springs out of the inherent knowledge and experiences within Arab societies. AEF constantly attempts to develop a shared vision related to learning in the Arab world; a vision that springs out of authentic initiatives which start with and continue to build on things people do and what role culture has to do with that. It starts with the premise that people are builders of understanding, knowledge, cultural expressions, and social groups.

Project: “Mujawara: Neighborhood Storytelling”

In Arab history, the term Mujawara refers to a process whereby storytellers congregate in an agreed upon area, and tell stories pertinent to the community. This project helps advance Mujawara and there will be the Hakaya festival in 2015 in Jordan, which will provide an in-depth learning opportunity and produce joint performances to discuss educational issues.
