The Jerusalem Center organizes a conference entitled “Prepaid Water Meters in Law and in Practice and Means for Development”

 

 

 

 

Our partners, the Jerusalem Legal Aid and Human Rights Center, organized a conference entitled “Prepaid Water Meters in Law and in Practice and Means for Development.” The conference, which discussed the issue of installing prepaid water meters under the current political, economic and social conditions of the Palestinian people, was hosted by the Center for Development Studies, Birzeit University.

The conference was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Center’s Board, Mr. Amin Annabi and Dr. Linda Tabar, Director of the Center for Development Studies, Birzeit University. In its two sessions, a number of papers, prepared by researchers and specialists in this field were presented. In the first session, a study issued by the Jerusalem Center and prepared by Muaz Karajah, entitled “Prepaid Water Meters in the Law and in Practice” was presented and Mr. Salah Hanieh, Head of the Palestinian Society for Consumer Protection, commented on it.  In the second paper, Mr. Ammar Jamous, the Independent Commission for Human Rights, gave a presentation on the basic features of the right to water and prepaid meters.  The third paper, presented by Ubay Aboudi, Bisan Center for Research and Development, gave an explanation about the prepaid water meters and economic and social rights.

During the same session, Dr. Amal Nazzal presented a paper entitled “Consumption in the Palestinian Public Sphere: Handcuffing the Horizon of Emancipation.”  The last paper in the conference was presented by Hama Zeidan, Coalition for Accountability and Integrity – AMAN and was about governance in the Palestinian water sector.

The conference was attended by a diverse audience from different areas of the West Bank, representing village councils and municipalities as well as a big number of citizens.  It was concluded by recording the recommendations of participants who well interacted with all papers that were presented and a very rich debate took place between attendees.
